Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria – A new era is dawning at Loftus Versfeld. The Blue Bulls Company has officially confirmed the appointment of Johan Ackermann as the new head coach for the Vodacom Bulls, a move widely celebrated as a fitting homecoming for a true son of Pretoria rugby. The announcement, released on July 16, 2025, sets the stage for the three-time South African Coach of the Year to take the reins at one of the world’s most storied rugby clubs.

A Legend Returns Home

For Johan Ackermann, this appointment is more than just a new job; it’s a return to his roots. His connection to the Bulls is woven into the fabric of his career. Willem Strauss, president of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, described the appointment as destiny.

“He’s the right person at the right time,” said Strauss. “He’s a Carlton League legend, he played his first Test at Loftus, he played for the Bulls… his blood is blue. This was always meant to be. His management of people and ability to drive culture are renowned.”

Echoing this sentiment, Edgar Rathbone, the chief executive of the Blue Bulls Company, emphasized Ackermann’s unique suitability for the role. Rathbone highlighted that the decision was based on both Ackermann’s proven coaching credentials and his deep alignment with the club’s core values.

“Johan Ackermann is not just an outstanding coach; he is a leader who lives and breathes the values of this union,” Rathbone stated. “His reputation for forging powerful team cultures, developing players to their full potential, and delivering results at the highest level is well proven. The Vodacom Bulls are a club built on legacy and ambition, and with Johan at the helm, we are confident our future will be shaped by excellence, resilience, and unity. This appointment marks an exciting new chapter for Bulls rugby, and we are thrilled to welcome him home.”

From the Coach’s Heart: “A Dream Come True”

Speaking from Italy, where he is currently assisting the Junior Springboks ahead of the World Rugby U20 Championship final, Ackermann could barely contain his excitement. He described the moment he received the offer as surreal and deeply emotional.

“The moment I received the call I got goose bumps – it still feels too good to be true,” Ackermann said. “I’m like a Grade One going to school for the first time. I’m so excited; it’s a privilege and an honour.”

He acknowledged the immense legacy and passionate support base he is inheriting. “It’s a great union with wonderful tradition and supporters. Eighty percent of my friends are Bulls supporters,” he noted. Ackermann is fully aware of the challenge ahead, recognizing that he is joining a team already at the top of its game. “The Vodacom Bulls have been successful for so many years, and now I have that challenge and I would like to thank the Board for giving me that opportunity. It’s a bit different to my previous roles where I had to help build teams up. The Bulls are already there – now I must make them grow and succeed even more.”

A Journey Forged in Grit and Excellence

Born in Benoni in 1970, Johan Ackermann’s entire rugby journey is a testament to resilience and transformation. As a player, he was a formidable lock known for his relentless physicality, earning 13 Test caps for the Springboks between 1996 and 2007. In a remarkable display of longevity and dedication, his final appearance at age 37 made him the oldest debutante in Springbok history.

After retiring in 2008, he transitioned seamlessly into coaching with the Lions in Johannesburg. Appointed as head coach in 2013, he ushered in a bold new era, guiding the team to two consecutive Super Rugby finals. His teams became famous for an expansive, high-tempo style of rugby, all built on a foundation of discipline and player empowerment. He cultivated a culture of respect and trust, which was instrumental in transforming overlooked talent into Springbok players and restoring pride in the Lions jersey.

His tactical acumen earned him international recognition. He led the SA ‘A’ side in 2016 and 2017 before moving to Gloucester in England, where he guided the club to a Challenge Cup final and a Premiership semi-final. He continued to leave his mark in Japan with the Red Hurricanes and Urayasu D-Rocks, proving his ability to bring cohesion and values-based leadership to diverse squads. Earlier this year, he returned to South African rugby as a coaching consultant for the SA under-20s.

Building Champions, and Good Men

Ackermann’s influence extends far beyond the rugby field. Deeply rooted in faith and shaped by his early career in the police force, he places as much value on character and resilience as he does on tactics. He is renowned as a coach who builds not only champions but also good men at the same time.

He joins a Vodacom Bulls franchise that is the most successful South African team in Super Rugby history, with four titles, and has amassed 25 Currie Cup trophies. Now competing in the cross-hemisphere Vodacom United Rugby Championship and the Investec Champions Cup, the Bulls continue to strive for excellence on multiple fronts. Ackermann’s appointment is a clear signal of the club’s ambition to build on this incredible legacy.

Johan Ackermann will be formally unveiled to the media in Pretoria next week, where he will undoubtedly share more of his vision for this exciting new chapter for the Vodacom Bulls.
